The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has confirmed the first reported Zika virus infection in a Maryland resident.
Ms Hennessey said the Zika virus poses no public health risk to others in the community as it is not transmitted person to person and is not present in Australian mosquitoes. The department is facilitating testing of people, especially pregnant women who have traveled to Zika-prone areas.
Three cases of the mosquito-borne virus have already been identified in Queensland this year, including one in a pregnant woman.
The Zika virus has been detected in the placentas of at least two American women who contracted the illness while traveling to Zika-afflicted areas and suffered miscarriages when they returned to the United States, STAT News reported.
Possible symptoms of Zika include fever, rash, conjunctivitis and joint pain.
The microcephaly cases have been centred in north-east Brazil, but the Zika outbreak has affected people in more than 20 countries in the Americas.
Acting chief health officer Roscoe Taylor said the virus required ongoing monitoring during pregnancy and has been linked to birth defects in babies of affected mothers. Officials would not say where in the state the patient lived.
The World Health Organization has deemed Zika a “global public health emergency”.
Two more people have been infected by the Zika virus in Florida, including one more person in Miami-Dade County, Florida Surgeon General Dr. John Armstrong said Thursday.

Captain Christine Sinclair says the Canadian soccer team is thinking of other things than the Zika virus as it bids to qualify for the Rio Olympics. The danger is for pregnant women. A second resident is also being tested for the virus.
