The first confirmed case of Zika, 1 of 11 across Texas.
Based on tests of each baby’s blood and cerebrospinal fluid, as well as blood tests from their respective mothers, the researchers found Zika infection to be much more prevalent in babies with microcephaly.
Martelli said it was unclear why fewer babies in this study had visible brain abnormalities, but said the results nonetheless showed the range of clinical symptoms Zika can cause in newborns, ranging from visible calcifications in the brain to epilepsy.
“We recommend. that we prepare for a global epidemic of microcephaly and other manifestations of congenital Zika syndrome”.
In a commentary, two experts who didn’t take part in the study said the new findings might provide a missing piece of the puzzle.
According to the DHMH, there are 85 confirmed travel-borne cases of Zika Virus in Maryland. Arthur and Annika were born with microcephaly.
Information provided by The News Service of Florida. Most mothers had Zika virus infections.
He added that states can’t get an adequate handle on the virus unless they have full federal resources. The vast majority of those cases, 639, are classified as travel-related, meaning they have been brought into the state by people infected elsewhere.
“This isn’t a partisan question”.
Mara Gambineri, a spokeswoman, said the health department tracks those cases “as they are still important for us to be aware of, but the cases are not reported in our case counts”.
The potential lifting of the travel advisory came up during remarks by Owen Bale, director of the R House Restaurant in Wynwood, who discussed how being in the so-called “Zika zone” has harmed his business. Anyone travelling to an area where the Zika virus is present is advised to cover exposed skin day and night as far as possible, use mosquito repellents, wear clothing treated with insecticide and sleep in a screened or air conditioned room, under a net if mosquitos may be present.
The CDC says a campaign combining aerial spraying of pesticides, use of larvicides and encouraging property owners to empty even the smallest sources of standing water helped control Zika-bearing mosquitoes in Wynwood.
In the United States, locally acquired cases have been found only in some neighborhoods in Miami, Fla., according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The study was requested by the health ministry in Brazil, which has more than 1,800 confirmed cases of Zika-related microcephaly.
“I can appreciate the health department’s concerns – I just think they went about it the wrong way”, said a resident. Six of the cases were in Miami-Dade and one in Palm Beach County.
