A Philadelphia woman who traveled to the Caribbean has contracted the Zika virus, the Philadelphia Department of Health announced Monday.

There have been dozens of cases reported across the US but this is the first case in Chicago and the fifth known case in IL. Health professionals and the CDC recommend that pregnant women cancel travel plans to affected areas while Zika outbreak warnings stand. Anyone planning to visit affected countries should take preventative measures against mosquito bites.

All three were diagnosed through lab tests after visits to the doctor and none of them were admitted to Timaru Hospital, a Community and Public Health spokesman said. The Health Minister said that guidelines for integrated vector management to prevent transmission by Aedes mosquito have been issued to all the states. “And at no time was anyone in our hospital, the physician’s office or those who have had casual contact with the patient at any risk of contracting the Zika virus”.

Health officials are advising pregnant women to avoid countries with outbreaks of the Zika virus.

The Zika virus – a disease caused by a virus carried by the Aedes mosquitoes – has seen a drastic uptick of cases across the United States over the past few weeks.

Williams said there were two ways exotic mosquitoes could get into New Zealand – by boat or plane.

Zika outbreaks have been reported across much of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Medical authorities say most people recover in about a week from symptoms such as fever, rash and joint pain.

Mosquito bites remain the primary vehicle for Zika transmission but sexual transmission of the virus infection is possible, the CDC said.
