Zika virus identified in two local residents

A total of 367 Zika cases exist across Florida, according to the Health Department.

The CDC issued an unprecedented travel warning Monday, advising pregnant women and their partners not to travel to a small community just north of downtown Miami, where Zika is actively circulating. Here’s what you need to know about the virus. The Florida Department of Health has identified an area in one neighborhood of Miami where Zika is being spread by mosquitoes.

As for the rest of the state, Bergen and Passaic counties have 15 cases each, the most for any of the 14 counties with reported cases as of Thursday.

The ADPH continues to follow closely the current situation with the Zika virus and adjusts the state’s response plan accordingly. It is meant to trigger an immune response that would protect against the mosquito-borne virus, according to a statement from the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

Wynwood is the only area where individuals are contracting mosquito-borne transmission of the virus, officials said. The additional funds will help maintain a robust mosquito surveillance program in New Orleans.

“We are going to use it to kill mosquito larvae before the get a chance to become adults and start biting our residents”, said Frank Calderon, Miami-Dade County Public Works & Waste Management.

CDPH said it is actively monitoring all pregnant women with Zika infection in California. Frank Welch, medical director for the department’s bureau of community preparedness. Smith could not confirm whether or not the latter mother contracted Zika in her country, but said that she was from a country where mosquitoes were transmitting the virus.

The first confirmed Zika virus infection was found in May 2015 in Brazil.
