Zika virus makes South Beach debut
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also suggested on Friday that pregnant women who are especially anxious about exposure to Zika should consider avoiding all of Miami-Dade County in southern Florida.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has added South Beach to its travel warning, telling pregnant women to avoid area after Zika transmissions were confirmed.
“Pregnant women are at the greatest risk because of the risk of microcephaly and other serious birth defects”, CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden says.
This means the state now has two areas considered active zones for Zika transmission.
Scott says two of the Miami Beach cases involved Miami-Dade County residents, and three involved tourists from New York, Texas and Taiwan.
Mosquitoes have begun spreading the Zika virus in a second part of Miami – the popular tourist destination of Miami Beach – Florida officials announced Friday. He described the area on the narrow island city as just under 1.5 miles between 8th and 28th streets.
The declaration of a new zone is the first since the Wynwood area north of downtown Miami was put on notice last month.
In a highly unusual travel warning, health officials advised pregnant women to avoid a part of Miami where mosquitoes are apparently transmitting Zika directly to humans. CDC said that not all infected people show symptoms for the infection and even some develop them very late, so spread of the outbreak can not be instantly reported, it takes time to conclude which area face the outbreak.
The CDC also said that pregnant women and their sexual partners who are anxious about potential Zika exposure might consider postponing nonessential travel to all parts of Miami-Dade County.
City officials have been working with Miami-Dade County authorities for weeks to eradicate Zika-carrying mosquitos and these efforts will now be redoubled, Levine said.
“While Zika virus causes only mild symptoms in most people, it can have devastating, lifelong consequences for unborn children”.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention referred calls to state health officials.
Another infection zone was previously identified in Miami’s Wynwood arts district.
The Zika virus has been linked to more than 1,700 cases of microcephaly in Brazil, raising alarm among public health officials globally about its spread. “We want to do all we can to ensure Florida remains safe for businesses and our families”. Thus far in the USA, more than 1,650 Zika infections have been reported, according to the CDC.
“Tourism is a driving force of our economy and this industry has the full support of our state in the fight against the Zika virus”, he said.
