Zika virus poses few concerns for Colorado schools
Last week, WHO declared that the continued spread of Zika – it has now infected more than 70 countries and territories – remains a global health emergency.

In adults, Zika can cause conjunctivitis – including redness and itchiness of the eyes – and, in rare cases, uveitis.
With eye infection confirmed in the virus, it raises the possibility that Zika could be spread by coming into contact with infected people’s tears. Despite the growing number of Zika cases in NY and throughout the country, Congress left for summer recess without enacting bipartisan legislation to help fight the virus.
The Zika virus can live in the eyes, and evidence of the virus has been found in the tears of animals.
“It is not yet known whether the virus typically makes that trip by crossing the blood-retina barrier that separates the eye from the bloodstream, traveling along the optic nerve that connects the brain and the eye, or some other route”, researchers wrote in their report.
Congress returned to work Tuesday from its seven-week summer break and failed to agree on additional funding to fight the Zika virus.
The researchers were able to confirm the presence of Zika in the mice’s eyes, however, they are still unsure how the virus traveled there. He said there might be a certain window when human tears could be highly infectious and those who come into contact with it can facilitate the spread of the virus.
“Our study suggests that the eye could be a reservoir for Zika virus”, said Dr. Michael Diamond, one of the study’s senior authors.
The United Nations health agency reiterated that mosquito bites are still the primary means of infection with the virus.
As an immune-privileged site, the eye doesn’t get a lot of activity from the immune system to prevent accidental damage to sensitive tissues for vision while fighting off an infection.
But if pregnant women are infected, they face a higher risk of having a baby with head and brain defects, a condition known as microcephaly. However, Orange County’s Health Department will continue to be vigilant about monitoring Zika virus and other mosquito-borne diseases.
Singapore is encouraging residents to use insect repellent, clear blockages in drains and wear long-sleeved clothing to protect themselves from mosquitoes as the number of Zika infections rose.
The virus strains in the two locally transmitted cases here “were not recently imported from South America”, reiterated the MOH and A*Star. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is advising that pregnant women avoid traveling to those areas of Miami where infections are occurring to reduce their risk of contracting Zika.
Also, the eyes of mice could be used to test anti-Zika drugs, the authors suggested.

“I don’t think there’s enough information about it yet that you have to be a little bit cautious and certainly ladies are going to see their doctor and sometimes doctors will say no just don’t go there”.
