After having a hand in the first two goals, scored by Adrien Rabiot and Angel Di Maria, Ibrahimovic curled home early in the second half – but played down any celebrations.

Ibrahimovic struck the French champions’ third goal against the club where he began his professional career before leaving for Ajax in 2001.

Wolfsburg move onto nine points in Group B with just that home match against Manchester United remaining, while CSKA are just about in contention to finish third and progress to the Europa League.

Di María scored his second goal midway through the second half with a simple header before being replaced by Lucas Moura who also found the target with an unstoppable free-kick.

A few minutes later Ibrahimovic left the field to a standing ovation from all sides of the ground.

Wolfsburg substitute Andre Schurrle played a key role, making the first as goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev deflected into his own net before the German worldwide scored the second himself.

The result was also good enough to take Portuguese side Benfica, who drew 2-2 at Kazakhstan’s Astana in an early kick-off, through.

Atletico are appearing in Europe’s elite club competition for the third season in a row for the first time and turned in another solid display in the Spanish capital.

PSG have won eight in a row in Ligue 1 and that flying form was evident in Sweden as they eased 2-0 ahead in the 16th minute through Di Maria.

Following a promising start, Patrick Twumasi and Marin Anicic had given Astana the lead, but a Jimenez-inspired Benfica gradually drew level.

Atletico Madrid and Benfica both advanced from Group C on Wednesday, while Galatasaray and FC Astana were eliminated.
