Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho praises striker

Armenian Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who played for the last quarter of an hour at Bournemouth, is another contender for a midfield place, having also been added to a squad that Mourinho said had been “sad” when he first encountered them. Forget that he is 34, the body and the mentality is not of 34.

But he said: “It was an important goal, a clever goal, a goal by somebody with a natural instinct to play football”.

“I don’t think they need a statement”.

“Look, the first thing I can tell you is that (at) his table for breakfast and for meals he is surrounded by the young ones, the kids”, Mourinho said. “We weren’t surprised and then we started playing”, Mourinho reflected.

“This week was really good for us, we worked really well and hard and we prepared the game well”.

United, without world record signing Paul Pogba who was suspended, were denied a clean sheet soon afterwards when defender Adam Smith beat David de Gea with a fierce shot from 12 metres.

“Let’s see what happens”, Ibrahimovic said when asked whether he might consider staying for more than a year.

“Everybody knows we are going to fight for the title”, added Mourinho. “We know we can play better than we did today [Sunday], although we did quite well, and I’m sure we will over the coming weeks”.
