Zobrist agrees to 4-year deal with Cubs

In return, NY sent the Cubs infielder Brendan Ryan and and pitcher Adam Warren. Castro, who was the Cubs’ longest-tenured player before the deal, will fill that void after playing second base during the second half of the season. According to reports, Zobrist has agreed to a four-year, $56 million deal to join his former manager Joe Maddon with the Chicago Cubs.

The 25-year-old Castro is coming off a disappointing season at the plate, but did show promise at the end of the season. Castro hit just.265/.296/.375 on the year, but rebounded to hit.353/.373/.588 in 143 plate appearances after being benched for a few games in August.

As first reported by Joel Sherman of the New York Post the Cubs have traded Castro to the New York Yankees. If Zobrist wants a deal closer to 20 million a year, the Mets are better off spending it on a younger player like Yoenis Cespedes. In 33 games at 2B in the second half of the season, Castro hit.

Prior to his down season in 2015, Castro was a three-time All-Star in Chicago, recording at least 10 HR and 65 RBI in four of his six Major League seasons. Part of the Cubs problem last season was their bullpen struggles.

The Yankees have a second baseman. He immediately replaces the Rob Refsnyder/Dustin Ackley platoon, and with the inclusion of Ryan in the deal, he can easily serve as a backup to Didi Gregorius. He finished with a record of 7-7 with a 3.29 ERA and one save.
