Disney’s new animation “Zootopia” has topped North American box office in its debut weekend, pulling in around 74 million USA dollars. That’s better than the previous best-selling feature cartoon from Disney, 2013’s “Frozen” and its 67.4 million dollars opening weekend, according to the movie box office watcher website comScore.
Dave Hollis, Disney’s Executive Vice President of Distribution, said “Zootopia” is the latest in a “creative renaissance” for the Disney Animation group, including “Tangled”, “Frozen”, “Big Hero 6” and “Wreck-It Ralph”.
Set in a city of anthropomorphic animals, Zootopia tells the story a rookie bunny cop who teams up with a fugitive fox to uncover a conspiracy.
We already knew that Zootopia had made an impressive start to its weekend at the box office, as it finally ended Deadpool’s three-week turn at the top of the chart. However, it came in behind expectations after receiving scathing reviews (audiences like it better, giving it an A- CinemaScore).
It took a G-rated animated feature to usurp the R-rated Deadpool’s reign at the box office. The top three are “Spider-Man” ($403.7 million), “Guardians of the Galaxy” ($333.1 million) and “Iron Man 3” ($318.4 million). Directed by Iranian-Swedish filmmaker Babak Najafi and starring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman, the film is the sequel to 2013 s “Olympus Has Fallen”.
Zootopia has been met with stunning reviews since it was released on Friday. The actress’ “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” stumbled with a $7.6 million launch from 2,374 venues. “The Revenant”, $3.3 million ($12.5 million international). 9. The movie, earning only a B CinemaScore, skewed female (56 percent) and notable older, with almost 90 percent of ticket buyers over the age of 25.
