‘Zootopia’ sets record opening for Disney Animation Studios

Walt Disney Animation Studios has a hit on its hands, as “Zootopia” opened with an estimated $73.7 in domestic ticket sales this weekend.

This total makes the film the biggest opening in Disney Animation Studios history, skating by “Frozen”, which brought in a $67.4 million opening weekend in 2013.

The animated family friendly movie, directed by Byron Howard (Tangled) and Rich Moore (Wreck-It-Ralph), follows the story of a rabbit named Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) who has dreams of becoming a police officer in the big city.

Millennium Films ” London Has Fallen.”Zootopia” finally dethroned box office champ “Deadpool”, which came in third with an estimated .4 million (over $311 million domestically, to date). The action thriller, starring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman, grossed $21.7 million, nearly $10 million less than its predecessor “Olympus” ($30.3 million) fared in its opening.

After four weeks in theaters, “Deadpool” barreled past the $300 million mark.

Another new release “Ip Man 3” tops the Chinese weekend box office, earning a total of 75 million dollars so far in China.

It took a G-rated animated feature to usurp the R-rated Deadpool’s reign at the box office.

Another Tina Fey raunchy comedy opened in fourth place: “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot”, with a $7.6 million debut. The movie has now grossed $72 million. The movie has now reached $673 million worldwide.

Risen and Kung Fu Panda 3 both fell, with the former taking No. 6 at $3.9 million and the latter settling for No. 7 with $3.5 million. $3.5 million and $2.1 million, respectively.

Fresh off its best picture win at last weekend’s Academy Awards, newspaper drama “Spotlight” capitalized on the Oscar love by pulling in $1.8 million.
