The Axon 7 – the latest in ZTE’s Axon line that debuted last year – has garnered high praise and comparisons to many of this year’s top-of-the-line flagships. ZTE’s Axon 7 and Axon Pro are two devices that are geared towards enthusiasts and power users, but both come with locked bootloaders, which is a serious drawback for anyone interested in customizing their device. The first one is usually root access, and the next gateway is an unlocked bootloader.

With an unlocked bootloader, Axon 7 and Axon Pro owners can do things like load custom ROMs onto their devices. You will be able to do that from a special “Developer sub-forum from within the Axon forums”.
Sure enough, ZTE revealed this morning that the US models of the Axon 7 and the Axon Pro would support bootloader unlocking.
In order to unlock the bootloader on your Axon 7 (this is a US-only thing from what we can tell), you are going to have to request an unlock from ZTE. Shih said that this was a response to the heavy clamoring from the Axon 7 user community. It’s asked that only those who are experienced with flashing ROMs and Android firmwares attempt bootloader unlocking.

What do you make of ZTE’s bootloader unlocking process? You’ll have to join the ZTE Community and submit a request through the Developer Lounge to have your phone’s bootloader unlocked. In the announcement, Shih repeated a few times that the warranty of devices with unlocked bootloaders will be voided, so that’s something those people have to live with.
