However after visiting Rome, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reached Nigeria, which is the social networking giant’s largest African market.
Accompanying Zuckerberg on the trip was his wife Priscilla Chan, with the couple also detailing their venture philanthropy projects.
The pair gifted Francis a model of “Aquila” – Facebook’s solar-powered aircraft created to deliver internet access in developing countries.
“We talked about last week’s natural disaster and how the Facebook community in Italy and around the world has come together to help people recover and rebuild”, Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post. During a Facebook Q&A today in Rome, Zuckerberg gave an update on how he has refined the assistant, saying that he is close to being able to show it to the world.
The Aquila drone, which will be considerably larger in relation to the model pictured, lately finished its first flight.
In a Facebook post following their meeting, Zuckerberg said the pair had discussed “how technology is helping create jobs and grow the Italian economy”. They look up to how he has found new ways to communicate with people no matter their religion around the world, and they want to do the same with Aquila and other technologies to reduce poverty and cultural isolation.
“‘We also discussed the importance of connecting people, especially in parts of the world without internet access”.
Last month the Connectivity Lab boasted about the first full-scale test flight of Aquila, a high-altitude, solar-powered drone created to administer internet in remote locations. “And we shared our work with the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to help people around the world”. As reported by Fast Company, Zuckerberg, for his part, made a post on the social media platform showing an image of him presenting the Pope with his gift.
